Monday through Wednesday, August 18th-20th, is the 2015 Ferrari Club of America National Meet, and this year it’s a big one, with Ferraris everywhere, on the Tour, at the Laguna Seca Racetrack, and here at the Concours, with 250 Ferraris entered. Many are being judged for trophies by IAC/PFA judges and many are entered in the Coppa, where everything on the car has to work (like the second hand on the clock) – no small task on some of the older Ferraris. Sunday, August 16th, is the climax of the week for most enthusiasts because it’s the day of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which celebrates its 65th anniversary this year. Automobiles from all over the world have gathered on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links to contend for the title of best of show, at what is widely considered the most competitive event in the collector car world.   A historic 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione ‘Tour de France’ set a new auction record for the model tonight, selling for an outstanding $13.2 million before another packed house at RM Sotheby’s Monterey event. Spurring a lively bidding contest between multiple collectors in the room and on the telephones, the influential Ferrari is the actual car that instituted the ‘Tour de France’ nomenclature following its overall victory at that legendary race in 1956. 1773 GT was constructed by the factory in March 1960 as the eighth of about forty-five aluminum-bodied competition 250 SWB Berlinettas for that year, and it boasts a remarkable history. Customers could order the new 250 GT Berlinetta in either right- or left-hand drive, specify an uprated competition engine, and add other custom touches to further personalize their cars. LWB California Offered at RM Monterey

1307 GT was constructed in early 1959 and began life as the 23rd of 50 LWB California Spyders built. On March 27, 1959, it was sold new directly from the factory to its first owner, Prince Alvise Hercolani of Bologna. A Ferrari fit for a prince would have some custom features, and this California Spyder was no exception. The car was fitted with open headlights, which was a configuration seen only on a handful of California Spyders. According to noted Ferrari historian Marcel Massini, s/n 1307 GT was originally fitted with highly attractive Superamerica-style front fender vents, an inset air intake on the hood and a hardtop.
