Fourth Place in GTLM and GTD at Laguna Seca

In a relatively uneventful two hour and forty-minute race at Laguna Seca in Salinas, California, the pair of red Ferrari 458 Italias finished just off the podium in what would prove to be a strong championship points day for both Risi Competizione and Scuderia Corsa. A fourth place finish by Giancarlo Fisichella and Pierre Kaffer in the no. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 458 Italia allowed them to close the gap in the GT-LeMans driver championship. Fast pit work by the Risi Competizione team allowed Fisichella to lead the race briefly in the first hour, and with the race going caution free throughout the second half, Kaffer would take the checkered flag in fourth position. Excerpt from the text by historian By Andreas Dziedzic “On November 5, 1950, the SCCA hosted the inaugural Pebble Beach Road Races in a highly casual setting, won by the youthful Phil Hill in a modified Jaguar XK-120 roadster. Pebble Beach was no simple, flat airport circuit like Santa Barbara or Palm Springs. Sterling Edwards and his close friend John B. Cheung and Perez Take Ferrari Challenge Victories

The second Northern California visit for the North America Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli saw twenty-seven examples of the Ferrari 458 Challenge Evoluzione battle at the world famous Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is a natural terrain road course just south of San Jose in Salinas, California. Among its many challenging corners is the world-famous Corkscrew, which plummets drivers 5 ½ stories in only 450 feet, providing a true test for the Ferrari 458 Challenge Evoluzione. The first race, held on Saturday afternoon, saw a pair of dominating victories in both the Trofeo Pirelli and Coppa Shell categories. Ferrari Challenge Returns to Laguna Seca

The North American Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli returns to Laguna Seca in California, with three full days of pure racing exhilaration. A field of 28 drivers will tackle the 11-turn road course famous for the “Corkscrew” and long history of sports car racing. Leading the Trofeo Pirelli class with 51 points is Ricardo Perez of Ferrari of Houston who took the checkered flag last month in Race 2 at Sonoma Raceway. The Ockey brothers from Ferrari of Ontario, Damon and Ryan, close the gap in second (46 points) and third place (42 points) respectively. As for the Coppa Shell class, teammates Chris Ruud and Jon Becker (Ferrari of Beverly Hills) have been in close contention all season. The pair of United SportsCar Championship races on Sunday at Laguna Seca witnessed strong performances by the teams driving the Ferrari 458 Italia. The day’s second race, which featured the Prototype and GT-Le Mans classes, saw the no. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 458 Italia finish a fighting third position. Drivers Pierre Kaffer and Giancarlo Fisichella started from the back of the field after changing tires after qualifying, negating their qualifying time. Kaffer made several positions during the opening stint, and strategy by the Risi Competizione team allowed Fisichella to lead the race in the second hour. Although he was forced off track in two instances in the closing stages of the race, Fisichella finished the race in third position behind Magnussen and Garcia’s Chevrolet and Priaulx and Auberlen’s BMW. It is with one eye on history that the teams representing Ferrari North America arrive at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for this weekend’s round of the 2014 IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. The drivers of the Ferrari 458 Italias from Scuderia Corsa, Risi Competizione, AIM Autosport, Spirit of Race and Krohn Racing will be attempting to emulate the victory by Pete Lovely, driving the a Ferrari 500 Testa Rossa, at the very first race held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in October of 1957. On that day, Lovely finished ten seconds ahead of John von Neumann in a Ferrari 625 TRC.
