International GT Open: Ferrari McLaren Duel Continues

A win and a podium in the main class of the International GT Open championship, whose third to last event was held on the weekend on the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit. The struggle for the championship is still open between the McLaren of Teo Martin Motorsport driven by Alvaro Parente and Miguel Ramos and three Ferrari crews, two of the AF Corse team and one of Scuderia Villorba Corse. Race 1. On Saturday, the race was very difficult, as the wet track turned out to be particularly treacherous. The McLaren of Bob Bell and Andrew Watson, which went off the track at Eau Rouge while it was leading, paid the price. International GT Open Has Ferrari GT Entries

Balfe Motorsport will be contesting five rounds of the International GT Open this year. The UK outfit of GT enthusiasts has been visiting the series regularly in the past and intends to step up its effort this year. At the moment, it plans to be present at Estoril, Silverstone, Spa, Monza and Barcelona with its 458 GT3, entrusted to its usual pair formed of Shaun Balfe and Phil Keen. “We are a family team and race for fun, although we aim at doing things professionally”, explains Shaun Balfe, “We always enjoy a lot our GT Open outings and aim at doing more this year. To defend their current Championship lead is the target for Ferrari, AF Cor­se, Gianmaria Bruni and Toni Vilander this weekend. On the eve of the 6 Hours of Shanghai – sixth round of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), scheduled for Sunday, November 2 – Ferrari is leading the GTE Constructors’ championship with 200 points (Porsche in second place at 171). Ferrari Wins Class at Spa 24 Hours

In it’s 90th year, the classic Spa 24 Hours has been won by Audi Belgium WRT with their R8. Overall victory was suspected to be won by one of the PRO teams (professional driver teams) so chances where low for Ferrari to win the title as the 19 entered 458 GT3’s started in PRO-AM and GENTLEMEN. After a race with lots of incidents and even a few drivers being taken to hospital after heavy crashes in the high speed Eau Rouge and Blanchimont corners, the #53 AF Corse Ferrari of Bertolini/Hommerson/Machiels/Cioci wins PRO-AM (fourth in a row for Ferrari) ahead of the #79 Ecurie Ecosse BMW Z4. Third in PRO-AM is another Ferrari, the #52 AF Corse of Lowndes/Wyatt/Rugolo/Piccini. These top three PRO-AM cars finished sixth, seventh and eighth in the overall classification. Two Class Poles for AF Corse Ferrari

Ferrari’s Le Mans 24 Hours got off on the right foot, especially for the AF Corse 458 Italia GT2 cars. In both the Pro and Am LMGTE classes, cars from the team run by Amato Ferrari set the fastest times in qualifying. In the Pro category, Gimmi Bruni, the world champion in the class in the 2013 WEC, set a time of 3.53.700 so that he and Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander start ahead of the rest, first of those being the Chevrolet of Magnussen-Taylor-Garcia, over a second down and the Aston Martin of Turner-Mucke-Senna. However there was also a serious set back in this class, as James Calado destroyed his 458 number 71, injuring himself in the process. It didn’t take long for Ferrari to make up for the disappointment of the opening round at Silverstone of the FIA WEC (World Endurance Championship) today at Spa-Francorchamps. This time, world champion, the Italian “Gimmi” Bruni and Finland’s Toni Vilander left their rivals in no doubt in the battle for LMGTE Pro honours from start to finish. They crossed the line to give Ferrari its eleventh endurance win in the Ardennes. Only once did car 51 lose the lead, but it was all part of the strategy and down to pitting at a different time to its main rivals. Blancpain Endurance Series Opener Results

There were two wins for Ferrari in the opening round of the Blancpain Endurance Series. The outright win went to the ART Grand Prix McLaren driven by Gregoire Demoustier, Alexandre Premat and Alvaro Parente, while Ferrari took victory in the Pro-Am Cup and the Gentlemen Trophy. AF Corse’s number 50 car won the Pro-Am Cup with Andrew Danyliw, Simon Knap e Andrea Sonvico driving to eighth place overall, thus beating the Roal Motorsport BMW Z4 and the Pro GT by Almeras Porsche 997 GT3 R. AF Corse, the stalwart Italian GT team closely linked to Ferrari and present in the GT scene around the world, will continue to be one of the top forces in the International GT Open where it has conquered the overall and SuperGT  Teams titles in 2010 (Kaffer-Barba) and 2012 (Bruni-Leo). The Picenza-based will enter this year four Ferraris 458 GT3, with some big names in its driver line-up. One car will see the debut of Giorgio Roda, the 20-years-old son of GT Open star Gianluca, who joins from the F.Abarth and will be associated to Paolo Ruberti. Eleven nominated with three reserves. A football team? No, the number of 458 GT2s Ferrari will enter to tackle the 82nd Le Mans 24 Hours, the most prestigious endurance race in the world. In the GTE-Pro class, AF Corse, the reigning world champion team is entering two cars, the first in the hands of champion Gianmaria Bruni and the second for Scuderia test driver, Davide Rigon.
