Report on the CAVALLINO CLASSIC X WEDNESDAY, January 16, 2001 This day's private track instruction saw twenty eager pupils receive the best possible one-on-one instruction in their very own vintage or contemporary Ferraris from Derek Bell, Brian Redman, Bill Adam and Justin Bell. These famous drivers actually drive the Ferraris, with the owners as passengers, to show what the cars can really do, and then they show the owners how to do it. By the end of the day, everyone agreed this added 10% to their knowledge of, and ability with, their Ferraris.
Late that afternoon, the second new event on the schedule was presented, the La Bella Macchina cocktail party at the Jet Aviation Executive Terminal at the Palm Beach International Airport. The FBO operator Jet Aviation had noted in the past how many private aircraft were coming to the Classic, so they offered to host a party for all Classic participants. They had jets there from Gulfstream and Galaxy, plus a P-51 Mustang, assorted sport planes, helicopters, and more, all while business proceeded as usual with jets landing and departing. The private aircraft were joined on the ramp by sixty Ferraris, while a large immaculate open hangar complete with white polished floor had been converted into a buffet and bar area, along with the several jet and boat displays (yes, an old wooden Riva). Participants were also welcomed to tour the inside of the beautifully decorated aircraft. The festive atmosphere at the edge of the airport's vast expanse brought to mind the tradition of U.S. airport races in the 1950s, and you half expected to hear engines roar, but of course the only such sounds came from Boeings and Airbuses on take off. We thank everyone at Jet Aviation for their hospitality, and there are plans afoot to meet again next year with even more planes.
