Report on the CAVALLINO CLASSIC X

SUNDAY, January 21, 2001

On Sunday morning, after a light breakfast at The Breakers, the weather, as if to meekly atone for its sins one day prior, provided a perfect sunny day to complement Mar-a-Lago's picturesque setting, and for this third edition of the Ferrari Feste a broad cross section of Maranello's finest machines adorned the impeccable lawns. In fact it is hard to decide which is the more beautiful setting, the Concorso at The Breakers or the display at Florida's grandest home.

A portion of each entrance pass went to the American Council of the Blind Scholarship Fund and, as in previous years, the artists featured in the Cavallino Classic art exhibition gave instruction to local art students.

A new award, the Palm Beach Cup, was decided upon not by judges but by guest vote. They had the morning to view the cars and to mark their ballots and soon it was time for the Champagne brunch. Votes were tabulated and The Palm Beach Cup was awarded, by an overwhelming majority, to Jeffrey and Frances Fisher for their gorgeous little green and black 212 Export Vignale Spyder, s/n 0090 E.

After the luncheon and the award presentation, everyone headed back to the lawn and in the course of casual conversation Arturo Keller and David Cottingham discovered that the former's 1952 225 Sport Touring Barchetta, s/n 0166 ED, and Anthony Bamford's 225 Sport Vignale Spyder, s/n 0154 ED, had competed together in the 1952 Monaco Grand Prix and finished only ten seconds apart! The two cars were soon reunited for a photo opportunity for the first time in no less than forty nine years.

The time had come to take leave and to close a happy and quite thick memory/photo album with a big roman numeral ten on it. Everyone at Cavallino would like once again to thank all of you who brought your Ferraris to the event and who joined the Classic for the Tenth Anniversary! Everyone realizes that there would be no Cavallino Classic without you. Thanks also to the many Sponsors who helped to make it happen, and to the Patrons whose continuing support allows the Classic to do as much as it does. Next year the dates for the eleventh Cavallino Classic are January 23 to 27, 2002. See you there!
