Ferraris at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance

Amelia-image-1200px

The 19th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance was held on Sunday March 9, at its traditional location on the 10th and 18th fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia Island, adjacent to the Ritz Carlton Hotel. The 2013 Honouree was the German racing driver Jochen Mass, and the gathering featured a class for cars that he had raced during his career, including an example of the Sauber-Mercedes C9 in which he won Le Mans in 1989, fittingly the silver anniversary year of that victory.

The 2014 event also celebrated the centenary of Maserati, the golden anniversary of McLaren as a car manufacturer, Offenhauser – powered cars, and the work of the Zagato design studio, with Andrea Zagato in attendance.

The concours day is actually the pinnacle of four days of activity at the venue, with seminars, a silent auction, manufacturer test drives, art gallery, road tour, airport party, the free to all “Cars & Coffee” on Saturday morning, and much more for participants to enjoy. Then there is the RM auctions on the Saturday the Gooding & Company auction on the Friday, so there is plenty to keep one occupied in the days leading up to the concours.

Come concours weekend, it was Florida weather at its finest, with abundant sunshine and high ambient temperatures. This seemed to draw record crowds to the venue, both for “Cars & Coffee” on Saturday morning, and to the concours itself on Sunday, where there were around 300 cars and motorcycles on display, ranged through 40 different classes. Actually, it isn’t really fair to single out one class, as there were some spectacular automobiles spread throughout the field, covering a wide variety of generations, and many with interesting histories, but it would take a book to do every car justice.

Well maybe we should make mention of the Ferrari classes! There were three of them, FP, for production cars built between 1950-1964, FP1 for production cars built between 1965-1972, and FR for racing cars, with a total of 21 entries, plus a further example in the Zagato class. There were also a number of Ferrari models in the RM and Gooding & Company auctions, 7 in the former and 6 in the latter, so plenty for the Ferrari enthusiast to enjoy, spanning a wide age range and variety of models.
